Bernardino Machado Museum, inaugurated in 2001, is installed in the Palace of Barão da Trovisqueira, built in 1857 by José Francisco da Cruz Trovisqueira, one of the most relevant “Brazilians” of Famalicão. The tile covering of the main facade and part of its interior, the wooden staircase and the ceilings in ornamental stucco stands out in the building’s architecture, presenting neoclassical decoration with mythological, allegorical symbolism and phytomorphic motifs.

The Museum was born from the close collaboration between the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão and the descendants of Bernardino Machado, who had deposited and donated a set of personal, academic and professional objects, as well as the documentary and bibliographic collection of the former President, one of the richest and most significant for the study of the history of the First Portuguese Republic.

In the permanent exhibition, it is possible to know the different facets of Bernardino Machado – the Man, the Pedagogue, the Scientist and the Politician -, the re-foundation of the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão (1835) and his political, economic and social journey to the end 19th century.

In 2002 joined the Portuguese Museum Network.
