The Main Square has been the heart of the Historic Center for centuries, and it continues to be the main meeting point in the city. Spacious, bright, and arcaded, it has an irregular shape and the particularity of being one of the few main squares in Europe with a slightly inclined ground.
The Main Square (formerly Campo Square) hosts some of the city’s main monuments. The space is centered by the façade of the Town Hall, a work by Queralt that occupies the only side without arcades. Next to it is the Old Episcopal Palace, which seems to compete in majesty.
The other three sides are the arcades that form the Espolón, an old promenade of the nobility now converted into one of the liveliest terrace areas in the center. Above it, beautiful façades of noble houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, including a design by Vázquez Gulías for the house of Fermín García (now converted into an exhibition space) adorned with tiles, a beautiful example of modernist architecture in Ourense.
