More than a hundred clay figures make up the curious Bethlehem of Baltar. It is perhaps one of the most beautiful in Galicia, both for its composition and theme: a photograph of Ourense of another time. Beyond the religious theme, here we find the games in the square, the itinerant photographer, the work in the fields, the tavern, the oven, the inhabitants of the roads…

All the figures are the work of the artist Arturo Baltar, who in 1967 began it by order of the Association of Nativity Scenes of the city. What at first was only the traditional nativity scene grew year after year with new elements, until in 1980 it was decided to restore the chapel of San Cosme and San Damián to house it permanently. The set, which is completed with murals by Xaime Quessada and friezes by Virxilio, is Ourense art in its purest form.
