‘S. Pedro da Cova Mining Museum’
The discovery of mineral coal, at the end of the 18th century, transformed the rural reality of São Pedro da Cova into an industrial economy and resulted in the creation of infrastructure to support mining exploration.
The so-called ‘casas da malta’ (guys’ houses) were the buildings that served as accommodation for miners from other regions and farther parishes. With the decline of the national hegemony of the São Pedro da Cova coal mines, in the mid-1950s, the only existing casa da malta took on a new function, housing the Mining Museum
This Museum’s mission is to safeguard, enhance, disseminate and boost the geological and mining heritage of São Pedro da Cova, by preserving the feeling of belonging to the local mining identity.
The Mining Museum is part of the Industrial Tourism offer of the Municipality of Gondomar.
