The Vía de la Plata, or Sanabrés Way, is the route of the Camino de Santiago that passes through the city of Ourense. This is the itinerary used by pilgrims coming from the south and interior of the Iberian Peninsula, both from Portugal (with cities such as Viseu, Vila Real, Bragaça, or Chaves) and from Spain (Seville, Cáceres, Salamanca, Zamora…).
Ourense is an excellent starting point for the Camino de Santiago as this city is located just over 100 kilometers from Santiago de Compostela, the minimum distance for pilgrims traveling on foot or horseback to earn the Compostela.
At the same time, it is an excellent destination after reaching Santiago. Once the Camino is completed, many pilgrims come to Ourense to enjoy its relaxing thermal baths, its gastronomic offerings, and heritage, as these cities are easily connected by both bus and high-speed train (34 minutes)
The route of the Camino from Ourense to Santiago offers landscapes of great natural beauty, as well as a rich heritage with emblematic elements such as the Oseira Monastery.
