The Old Castle of Mirandela is located in the parish of Mirandela on a small hill, whose ridge runs east-west, with steep slopes on the north side limited by the Mourel stream.

Its occupation dates back to the Roman Iron Age, as suggested by the results of excavations carried out in the 1980s (LEMOS, 1993, II: 269-270). The “Parish Memories” (1758, 23, 156: 1031-1042), as well as Ernesto de Sales (1950, I), recognize the Old Castle as the site of occupation until the transfer and construction of the new castle and settlement to the hill of São Miguel by King D. Dinis in the year 1282. The Old Castle (Village of Mirandela) was granted its first charter by King D. Afonso III on May 25, 1250.

At the top of this hill, the schist rock outcrops, with cuts and improvements, as well as cavities of various configurations, walls and/or partitions, appearing in the plowed lands, a lot of clay and manual granite millstones, some of these removed and being kept by the municipality.
