The Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Museum, founded in 1947 by Albano Sardoeira, is housed in one of the cloisters of the Monastery of São Gonçalo, in the town of Amarante.

This museum boasts an eclectic collection of modernist and contemporary art, which is a genuine surprise for visitors considering the size of this charming town.

The name of this museum is due to the town’s favorite son, Amarante Souza-Cardoso, one of the most renowned 20th-century artists in Portugal. The museum exhibits several of his sketches, portraits, cartoons, and abstract paintings; it also features significant works by other local artists such as O Grande Desvairo by Acácio Lino, which depicts the burial of Pedro I.
