The museum is located in an old fortress built in the sixteenth century. From the sixteenth to the eighteenth century it was a defensive building and prison, later it was used as a lazaretto to shelter seafarers who arrived in the city affected by some infectious disease. The museum as such was inaugurated in 1968. It has been considered a historical-artistic monument since 1949 and since 1994 a Cultural Interest Site.
The museum houses archaeological objects such as: protohistoric ourivaria, megalithism, Bronze Age, castrexa culture, romanization and different aspects of the city. Part of these objects come from the Elviña Hillfort.
O Castelo houses the following dependencies:
- Library (Casa Botero)
- Exhibition rooms (ground floor)
- Exhibition rooms, sacristy, and chapel (upper floor)
- Casemates (annexes – ground floor)
- Cistern (annexes)
