With ancestral uses, the slate, from the Valongo underground, began to experience intense extraction in the mid-19th century. This territory was a pioneer in mining innovation and industrialization of slate activity. The black slate, one of the municipality’s landmarks, is currently concentrated in the village of Campo with two companies extracting it. One works in depth and the other in an open pit quarry. Some family processing companies still exist. The famous and nostalgic school blackboards are manufactured here, particularly for export. Artists and artisans also dedicate themselves to producing unique and expressive pieces, resulting from an activity that is economically relevant to the municipality.
