At the beginning of 1847, an extraordinary vision was born: a haven of public delight, designed on the banks of the Tua River.
Thus was born a dream that took shape over time, like a story in chapters, each stage a step towards realization. The waters of the Tua River, silent witnesses, have seen the birth of a space of joy and leisure, where memories and laughter intertwine with the breeze of time.
Its creation dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, with the construction of the Alameda do Cardal promenade, which extended along the left bank of the Tua River.
Over the years, the park was expanded and remodelled, until it reached its current configuration in the 1950s.
In 1991/92, the Parque do Imperio was remodelled, with the revision and redefinition of the promenade circuit, the increase in garden areas and the introduction of new elements, such as the amphitheatre, the illuminated fountain and the bronze sculptures «Bailarinas» (1964), by Hélder Batista and António Paiva, and «Princesa do Tua» (1991), by José Lamas.
