The Museum is located in the Santa Rita Hydroelectric Power Station, inaugurated on 5 October 1914. This work, of wide social scope for the time, allowed the then Vila de Fafe to provide a public service electricity network. Due to its historical and cultural interest, as an important milestone in the electrification process of the northwest of Portugal, and given the good condition of the infrastructure, the Fafe City Council, the owner, decided to convert the facilities and equipment into a museum, creating the regional electricity museum, the first of its kind in the country.

The Santa Rita Hydroelectric Power Station Museum is part of the national network of energy museums.
