The most important public garden in the city, it took its name from the place where it was built (Calvário, where there was a small chapel). The initiative for its construction was due to the then mayor, José Florêncio Soares and had the support of the illustrious Brazilian from Fafe, Comendador Albino de Oliveira Guimarães. The formal inauguration of the romantic garden took place on December 26, 1892.

At the time of its construction, the Passeio Público was also a characteristic element of Portuguese society in the second half of the 19th century, frequented by the bourgeoisie as a place of conviviality, entertainment and leisure, discussing the latest news, listening to music played by bands in the kiosks and watching theatrical performances and fireworks launching. In 1912 a beautiful lake and a bandstand were built, which still exist. The garden has a rectangular structure, is completely walled and lined with leafy cedars, lindens and northern oaks. The garden remains a space for entertainment, rest, conviviality and meeting, a privileged place from which to contemplate paradisiacal landscapes.
