The Neolithic is a stage of Prehistory in which a phenomenon known as Megalithism is situated, which is characterized by the construction of monuments with large stones or megaliths.
Megalithic monuments can be found in Ribeira, such as the Dolmen of Axeitos, one of the most outstanding funerary monuments in Galicia, considered a Site of Cultural Interest and known as the Parthenon of Galician Megalithism.
The sky has been the guide of humanity for thousands of years and the position of the Moon and the Sun determined the behavior of our ancestors. Likewise, the construction of dolmens determined their celestial orientation. With more than 6,000 years of antiquity, the Axeitos dolmen has the usual orientation of European dolmens, which allows the sun to enter its corridor at the equinoxes. It should be remembered that the dolmens were buried covered by a tumulus, receiving the name of mámoa.
This great megalithic monument houses in its stones the ancient community memory and respect for nature of our ancestors.
