Work on the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption began in 1219, based on the Romanesque style, which in this building already shows a clear evolution towards Gothic. Today, different styles have finally materialized in the temple due to the extension and renovation works that followed the original project.
Among the most notable elements of the complex is the façade, whose design is marked by three large pointed arches that correspond to the naves of the building; the majestic rose window, the balustrade and the baroque towers that frame the whole.
It has a Latin cross layout, and its interior features include Gothic mural paintings, its Rococo altarpiece, the Renaissance cloister and its cathedral museum, considered one of the most important in Galicia, whose collection includes liturgical and religious objects such as the collection of episcopal slippers; goldsmith’s pieces, such as chalices and patens, sculpture, Flemish panels or the magnificent collection of English alabaster from the 15th century.
Annexed to the episcopal palace, the cathedral presides over the central square of Mondoñedo, where it seems to “kneel” before visitors who contemplate it from the side or the arcades. It was declared a National Monument in 1902.
