The production of sweet regueifa is strongly associated with the Easter season in Santa Maria da Feira, since in times past, when sponge cake was considered a luxury only accessible to the wealthiest families, sweet regueifa was a delicacy of excellence for most Feirenses.
Throughout the municipality, there are many pastry shops and confectioners that continue to make sweet regueifa throughout the year. This famous delicacy can be enjoyed with butter, cheese, ham, jam or even olives and washed down with red wine or port, or in other non-alcoholic options, with tea, coffee or barley.
Sweet regueifa goes well with almost everything!
