Matosinhos is located on the northern coast of the Porto Metropolitan Area, having had a strong connection with the sea since ancient times and boasting a vast expanse of beaches. This intimate relationship with the sea has profoundly shaped the city’s profile, where the Port of Leixões is located, one of the most important port infrastructures in Portugal. Fishing is one of the most traditional activities in Matosinhos and is at the heart of Matosinhos, making it one of the best places to enjoy the richness of the Portuguese sea. Since the 12th century, the image of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos has been venerated here, giving rise to one of the most important pilgrimages in northern Portugal, which takes place here annually 42 days after Easter. The sanctuary that houses this image is considered one of the most important historical monuments in the region, as is the Leça do Balio monastery, built in the 14th century by the Order of the Hospitaller Knights. This monastery is famous for being the site of the wedding of King Fernando and Dña. Leonor Teles. Another monument that marks the landscape of the region is the Obelisk of Memory, which marks the landing in 1832 of D. Pedro IV and his “Liberating Army” on these beaches. Matosinhos is also the birthplace of architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, who left some of his most well-known works here, such as the “Casa de Chá da Boa Nova” or the “Piscina das Marés”. The intimate relationship with the sea has also made Matosinhos the ideal place for a gastronomic experience of the best products that come from the work of its fishermen, allowing the tasting of fresh seafood and fish of the highest quality.
