The Municipality of Ribeira is divided into 9 parishes: Palmeira, Oleiros, Ribeira, Castiñeiras, Aguiño, Carreira, Artes, Olveira, and Corrubedo. It is the head of the Barbanza region in the south of the province of A Coruña and the northern edge of the Ría de Arousa. Ribeira has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the Axel Dolmen, built more than 5000 years ago, or the Bretal menhir. The petroglyph of the Piedra de las Cabras dates back to the Metal Ages, and the settlement of the Castro de la Cidá is an example of the villages that existed here in the first millennium BC. The arrival of the Romans left behind funerary steles in the parish of Olveira and ceramic materials collected on the island of Sálvora. In the Middle Ages, since the late 11th century, the parish of Santa Uxía existed, and the toponym Ribeira is recorded in the year 1387 as “Santa Ougea de Ribeira.” From this moment, the town grew thanks to fishing activities, and in 1906 it was granted the title of City. Additionally, since 2001 it has been considered a Galician Tourist Municipality.
