Once populated by trilobites (living beings older than dinosaurs) and by the Romans who left here the largest underground gold mining complex in the entire Empire, the municipality of Valongo is today the main gateway to the Parque das Serras do Porto. In addition to the Sierras de Santa Justa and Pías that are part of this green infrastructure along with the mountains of Paredes and Gondomar, Valongo’s Identity Card includes the centuries-old tradition of Regueifa and Biscoitos, the art of the Traditional Portuguese Toy, the spectacular tradition of Bugiadas and Mouriscadas, Slate and impressive Religious Monuments. These logos, which bring together the cities of Alfena, Ermesinde, and Valongo and the villages of Campo and Sobrado, serve as a motto for major cultural events: Feira da Regueifa e do Biscoito; Pilgrimage to Santa Rita; Festa da Bugiada and Mouriscada; Festa do Brinquedo; and the exhibition Roman Mining in Valongo at the Municipal Museum.
