Royal Treasures. Masterpieces from the Holy Land Museum is an international exhibition that will showcase in Santiago de Compostela the extraordinary and little-known artistic treasure of the Holy Land Museum in Jerusalem, composed of donations from European Catholic monarchies over 500 years. It will be the first and only time that these pieces from Jerusalem can be seen in Spain, exhibited at the Gaiás between March and August 2024. Over half a millennium, European royal houses donated material and financial resources as well as sumptuous pieces of sacred art to the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, a place of profound spiritual symbolism and an important center for the devotion and power projection of Catholic kings and princes. Centered around these donations, the exhibition showcases part of this artistic treasure, composed of valuable religious objects made of metals and precious stones, chalices, jewelry, codices, ornaments, sacred vestments of rare craftsmanship… Unique pieces of incalculable value that have been guarded for more than 800 years, since the arrival of the Franciscans in Palestine, but have rarely been seen by the general public. The exhibition also allows visitors to explore the history of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre and the role of the Custody of the Holy Land, the community of friars of the Order of Saint Francis who assume the guardianship of this unique archaeological, artistic, and liturgical heritage.
