Royal Treasures. Masterpieces from the Holy Land Museum is an international exhibition that will exhibit in Santiago de Compostela the extraordinary and little known artistic treasure of the Museum of the Holy Land in Jerusalem, composed of donations from the European Catholic monarchies over 500 years. It will be the first and only time that these pieces from Jerusalem can be seen in Spain, being exhibited in the Gaiás between March and August 2024.
For half a millennium, European royal houses donated material and financial resources as well as sumptuous pieces of sacred art to the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, a place of profound spiritual symbolism and an important center for the projection of the devotion and power of Catholic kings and princes.
With these donations as a central theme, the exhibition displays part of this artistic treasure, made up of valuable religious objects in precious metals and stones, chalices, jewelry, codices, ornaments, sacred vestments of rare workmanship… Unique pieces of incalculable value that have been guarded for more than 800 years, since the arrival of the Franciscans in Palestine, but which have rarely been seen by the general public. The exhibition also allows visitors to retrace the history of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre and the role of the Custody of the Holy Land, the community of friars of the Order of St. Francis who assume the role of guardian of this unique archaeological, artistic and liturgical heritage.
