Ribadavia was born as we know it today in the 11th century, and gained importance, above all, from 1065 when it is believed that that was when the first Jews arrived in the town.
The existence of the Jewish quarter demonstrates the great importance that the settlement had in the Middle Ages until the expulsion decreed by the Catholic Monarchs in the 15th century.
This community were the true supporters of the town’s economy, who were dedicated to all types of jobs: lawyers, doctors, merchants. The neighborhood, located in the heart of the old town of Ribadavia, is made up of narrow streets, dark corners and narrow streets on which successive construction has been carried out.
From this there remain some emblazoned houses that highlight the beauty of stone, the main construction element. It seems that instead of one of these houses, there was an ancient synagogue, the religious center of the Jewish community.
