More than a hundred baked clay figures make up the curious Belén de Baltar. It is perhaps one of the most beautiful in Galicia, both for its composition and its theme: a photograph of Ourense from another time. Beyond the religious theme, here we find the games in the square, the itinerant photographer, the fieldwork, the tavern, the oven, the inhabitants of the roads… All the figures are the work of the artist Arturo Baltar, who began it in 1967 at the request of the city’s Nativity Scene Association. What was initially just the traditional nativity scene grew year after year with new elements, until in 1980 it was decided to restore the chapel of San Cosme and San Damián to house it permanently. The ensemble, which is completed with mural works by Xaime Quessada and friezes by Virxilio, is pure Ourense art.
