Campo da Ataca is located near the centre of the village. You can visit the place coming from Guimarães towards S. Torcato or if you take the Pedestrian Route, this is one of the points of passage.

According to the tradition of many generations, it was in S. Torcato that the Battle of S. Mamede began on 24 June 1128, in which D. Afonso Henriques conquered the leadership of the Portucalense County and began the political process of independence from Portugal, ending the attempt at Galician hegemony.

It is significant that the name of the place is “Campo da Ataca” – or attack – a very suggestive warlike designation.

In 1996 the current artistic-monumental complex was inaugurated that celebrates this event.
