In 1525, King João de Coimbra decided to build a private chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception, which would be known as the Coimbras Chapel. It was designed by the Biscainhos masters, builders of the Biscainhos Palace.
The chapel, attached to the Church of São João do Souto, even had the chapel of Santo António dos Esquecidos attached to it.
It was classified as a National Monument in 1910.
In 1906, the Coimbras mansion was demolished due to the urban redevelopment of the area, creating Largo São João do Souto. However, the Manueline architectural elements were preserved and in 1924 the building was rebuilt on the opposite side of the street, in continuity with the chapel.
Today, the Casa dos Coimbras houses a bar/restaurant.
