The Alto da Fonte do Milho Archaeological Station – National Monument – is located on a spur overlooking the Douro river valley.
Traces of occupation date back to the period between the 1st century AD and the 4th/5th centuries AD. It presents a defensive system consisting of two lines of walls, built in schist, with the respective access located to the SW, a characteristic that, as a whole, has given it the general name of castellum or fortified villa .
The archaeological excavations carried out by Russell Cortez revealed the existence of some outbuildings originally dedicated to agricultural activity, among which the presence of a wine press – or torcularium – for wine or olive oil stands out, which seems to attest to the importance attributed to the cultivation and wine production. In the living part of the villa, several polychrome mosaics were found, decorated with figures of fish, covering a bathtub about one meter deep.
