On July 24, 1948, the 1st Voyage of the “Festa da Dorna” of Ribeira took place, a celebration declared of “Tourist Interest of Galicia” in 2005. Since its foundation, it has been characterized by imaginative activities, participation, and humor tinged with retranqueira irony, all in an apparently chaotic and carnival-like festive flow, “the dorneira tide”. In this festive atmosphere filled with “baskets” of joy, popular culture materializes full of modernity and tradition. Since its inception, the festival has navigated through history weathering storms just like the boat that gives it its name. The dorna, a boat, is said to be “very seafaring”; “A Dorna”, the festival, “is the most broken”, they sing in its anthem. The festival that gathered a few dozen neighbors in its first year is now a meeting and leisure point for thousands of people from all over Galicia and increasingly known and recognized throughout Spain and beyond.
