The Church of Santa María A Real constitutes the highest expression of baroque art in our region. Its designation as “Real” is due to the fact that it was built on a site belonging to the crown. The work was completed in the first half of the 18th century and is the best example of churrigueresque style in Galicia as it resembles more the neighboring constructions of the nearby country of Portugal than those of Galicia itself, which would indicate the presence of Portuguese stonemasons in the work. The church has three naves separated by pilasters and a very high transept that at its intersection with the central nave is covered with a half-orange dome that is topped on the outside with an octagonal drum finished with a lantern. The rest of the church is covered with ribbed vaults of Gothic tradition. It is known that the construction of the church was completed in 1739, with Don Agustín Levoso as abbot. Although it was not a monastery, it acquired the rank of abbey. We are therefore looking at a building that began to be built in the 17th century and was completed in the 18th century.
