The symbolism of the Church of São Miguel is linked to the founding of the nation and to the tradition that says that King D. Afonso Henriques was baptized there. Inside, next to the baptismal font, there is an inscription that seeks to confirm this fact.
The interior floor is occupied by tombs of noble warriors, all of them linked to the founding of the nation. Over time, the upper part of the village – where the church is located – was progressively abandoned and with it also the old church of São Miguel.
In the 19th century, Francisco Martins Sarmento, an illustrious man from Guimarães, directed the restoration of the church, seeking to respect the original design.
The last intervention it underwent dates back to the 20th century. The Church of São Miguel is classified as a National Monument.
