The Church of Pópulo was built in the 16th century by order of Archbishop Frei Agostinho de Jesus, to be buried there. Upon his death in 1609, his body was transferred in 1628 to a wooden tomb commissioned by the city of Braga and placed in an arcosolium in the presbytery. The original mannerist character of the church changed in the 18th century, when the façade was rebuilt in neoclassical style according to the design of Carlos Amarante.
The church is dedicated to the Virgin venerated in the church of Santa Maria do Pópulo in Rome. The interior is worth a visit for its rich decoration, in which the blue and white tiles attributed to the ceramist Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes (18th century) stand out.
