The Galician Railway Museum, MUFERGA, was inaugurated in 2001. It is located in the old Renfe Railway Workshops, near the Monforte de Lemos station, and consists of two completely different buildings: The Museum itself, which is situated in what was the old traction and repair workshop for Galicia’s steam locomotives and where part of the historical material preserved and repaired by the Museum is now located. The Roundhouse, located about 600 meters at the rear exterior of the Museum and connected to it through an internal track. It is a horseshoe-shaped building with thirty-eight radial tracks and a rotating transfer bridge that allowed the locomotives to be turned and changed direction, and it was also the old Monforte Locomotive Depot. This latter building is better known by the name “Railway Roundhouse” and has been declared by the European Union as a “Notable Building of European Industrial Heritage”. It is currently the largest rehabilitated and operational building of its kind in Spain. Objectives
Among its objectives is the development of activities for the exhibition and conservation of the Museum’s material assets, the dissemination of these among society, and the promotion of railway transport, caring for and preserving mobile material, infrastructures, tools, documentation, and other elements that due to their age, history, or special characteristics should be preserved.
