The Railway Museum of Galicia MUFERGA, was inaugurated in 2001.
It is located in the old Railway Workshops of Renfe, near the station of Monforte de Lemos, and consists of 2 totally different buildings: The Museum itself is located in what was the old traction and repair workshop of the steam locomotives of Galicia and where today is located part of the historical material preserved and repaired by the Museum itself.
The Rotunda Building, located about 600 m to the rear outside of the Museum and connected to it by an interior track. It is a horseshoe-shaped building with thirty-eight radial tracks and a rotating shuttle bridge that allowed turning and changing the direction of the locomotives and that was also the old Locomotive Depot of Monforte.
This last building is better known by the name of “Rotonda Ferroviaria” and has been declared by the European Union as “Outstanding Building of the European Industrial Heritage”. It is currently the largest rehabilitated and operational building of its kind in Spain.
Objectives
Among its objectives is the development of exhibition and conservation activities of the Museum’s material collections, the dissemination of these among society and the promotion of rail transport, caring for and preserving the rolling stock, infrastructure, tools, documentation and other elements that, due to their age, history or special characteristics, should be preserved.
The railway material
The museum’s collection is made up of locomotives, wagons, boxcars and Spanish gauge cars that have been aesthetically and operationally restored and are now in running order.
The Museum also has custody of many other railway objects, such as: CTC – Old Centralized Traffic Controls, lanterns, signals, tools, furniture, telephones, etc., as well as different materials donated to the museum by other entities and/or individuals for their preservation.
