The Municipal Palace is a modernist building constructed between 1908 and 1912, occupying the northern front of María Pita square. It was inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII in 1927. It houses various administrative offices of the city council. The initial project of this Galician stone building was started by Pedro Mariño, with a floor area of 2,300 square meters. It has 3 floors and an attic. Its facade was built along a 64-meter front, with 43 windows open to the outside and 15 arcades in its interior body that serve spacious porticoes. On its first floor is the noble area, which has several rooms, the Red, the Blue, and the Golden, the latter with reliefs on the front of the seats that recount the most important historical events of the city. Also on the first floor are the Clock Museum and the Gallery of Mayors, a corridor where each of the city’s mayors has their portrait, each by a different author and style, many posed in suits, some in tails, and others, like Liaño Flores, in a lawyer’s gown. The Mayor’s office stands out, and on the same floor are the councilors’ meeting rooms, with magnificent paintings by Galician artists. Also noteworthy is the honor staircase that connects the Mayor’s office with the Plenary Hall, which was inaugurated in 1955 by Francisco Franco and his wife, Carmen Polo. The second floor houses offices and desks, and the attic is where the concierge’s residence used to be. On the facade, there are four carved white stone statues representing the four Galician provinces: A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense, and Pontevedra. At the top, you can see the city’s coat of arms flanked by two matrons, which for some people mean Peace and Industry and for others Work and Wisdom, along with a legend with the following inscription: “Very noble and very loyal city of A Coruña, head, guard, and key, strength and bulwark of the kingdom of Galicia.” In the highest tower are the clock and the bells made of a bronze and tin alloy; they weigh more than 1,600 kilos. The dimensions of María Pita square are 112 m by 99.50 m. The 112 m are the two sides parallel to the facade of the Municipal Palace; the 99.50 m correspond to the lateral sides of the city council building.
