It occupies the old “Hospital de Sancti Spiritus” or del Arrabal, which is already documented in 1583. The current façade is the result of a renovation carried out in the mid-19th century. It preserves a beautiful central courtyard and a gallery on the first floor. In 1772 the hospital was donated to the Order of San Juan de Dios, which occupied it during that century and the first two decades of the 19th century.
From 1821 it became the Town Hall until 2001.
After a complete renovation of this facility, a new museum space was designed to promote and learn about the wine culture of the Ribeira Sacra. It has a shop with a wide variety of wines with the Ribeira Sacra Designation of Origin. The Municipal Tourist Information Office is also located in this property.
The museum space aims to bring visitors closer to the natural elements of the Ribeira Sacra: earth, water, sun, fog,… to understand the importance of each of them. One of the hallmarks of the Ribeira Sacra are the benches, stairs, walls, terraces, etc. that will be present in a large part of the exhibition, showing us a broad study of wine and the Ribeira Sacra with the most modern audiovisual media.
We will take a trip through the artistic, historical and natural heritage of the Ribeira Sacra: civil architecture, nature, Romanesque and monasteries, wineries, festivals, traditions, crafts and its connection with the Camino de Santiago.
This innovative permanent exhibition explores the culture of wine. The legends of time, the landscapes, the lands of the Ribeira Sacra, our wines, increasingly acclaimed internationally. On a guided tour you will be able to enjoy photographs, videos, sculptures, paintings, sounds and lights, and discover the true history of wine that is part of the life of its inhabitants, shaping their personality, just as they do that of wine.
