Aboim is a parish in the municipality of Fafe with around 400 inhabitants, and the northernmost of the municipality. It belonged to the municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto until 1853, when it was incorporated into the municipality of Fafe.
Aboim is today a tourist route of the municipality, which stands out for its pedestrian routes of the Petit Rota (PR) and another in the Grande Rota (GR) that allow you to observe the rural heritage of the villages of the mountain range and the five surrounding mountain ranges: Marão, Gerês, Cabreira, Serra de Agra and Maroiço.
The village of Aboim has a windmill with unique characteristics, built at the beginning of the 20th century, more specifically between the years 1923/1926.
The Parish Council, with the support of the Fafe City Council and the Leader project, restored the building using traditional materials and techniques. After a year of work carried out by the Etnoideia company (research, projection and reconstruction) and thanks to the involvement of the community, it was possible to collect all the memories.
In 2007, the factory became part of the Portuguese Network of Factories and the International Society of Molinology.
To complete the theme of the uses and customs of the village, the parish decided to create the Interpretation Centre – Aldeia Pedagógica da Montanha e do Centeio, installed in the former primary school of Aboim.
The interactive space, with multidisciplinary, brings together mini-laboratories and workshops where it is possible to learn, relive and remember.
