Housed in two former 19th-century paper mills, the Terras de Santa Maria Paper Museum, unique in the country, is dedicated to the history of papermaking, from its initial “sheet-by-sheet” production phase, to the automation of the paper production process, paper that marks the industrial environment of the last century, tracing the recent history of the paper industry in Portugal.

At the Paper Museum, voted Best Portuguese Museum in 2011, the doors open to unique sensory experiences at the Engenho da Lourença (manufacturing production) and the Casa da Máquina (industrial production), reviving memories and practices of papermaking.

Opened on 26 October 2001, the Paper Museum is the first museum dedicated to the History of Paper in Portugal, highlighting the importance that the paper industry has had in the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira and the vast region of Tierras de Santa Maria since 1708.

The Paper Museum also houses a collection of watermarks and a collection of pieces from different paper mills throughout the country.
