The Valongo Paleozoic Park, designed in 1995, emerged from a project co-financed by the European Commission’s Life fund. This project was developed by the Valongo City Council and the Department of Geology of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, with the collaboration of the Departments of Zoology and Botany of the same Faculty. It arose from the need to preserve the fossils of Trilobites and other organisms from the Paleozoic Era and a whole set of natural geological characteristics that make the Serras de Valongo become a living laboratory available to all those interested in learning more about the History of Earth. After the project, a protocol was agreed between the Municipality and the FCUP Geology Center, with the aim of continuing scientific advice and the development of visits and other dissemination and awareness-raising actions
