Opened on June 10, 1906, it was built on the initiative of a man from Matosinhos who made his fortune in Brazil, and was named in honor of António Constantino Nery (1859-1906), governor of the State of Amazonas. After a long closure at the end of the 20th century, the building was acquired by the Matosinhos City Hall and has been remodeled according to the project of the Portuguese architect Alexandre Alves Costa, keeping only the original façade. It has been operating as the Municipal Theatre since 2008, and has a capacity of 240 people, offering a rich and diverse program, with a special emphasis on theater, dance, classical music and jazz.
