The Torre da Alfândega, in the heart of the city of Guimarães, is a national monument full of symbolism for Portugal and the people of Guimarães, and where you can read “Portugal was born here.” The architectural project was designed by Margarida Morais and Miguel Melo, technicians from the city council, and will allow the only remaining tower of the medieval wall to be used by the public. This intervention preserves the historical heritage of Guimarães and improves the cultural experience of visitors, specifically of the walls, highlighting the importance of this national monument in the historical legacy of the birthplace of Portugal.

The requalification of the space included not only the physical restoration of the monument, but also the preparation for the installation of museographic content that will lead to the creation of the Interpretation Centre, which will be based in the Customs Tower itself, and which will be developed over the next few months.

The Torre da Alfândega can be visited every day between 10:00 and 18:00. Admission is free.

It is impossible to remain indifferent before the monumentality of this well-preserved structure, which has remained virtually intact since its construction in the 13th century.
