Its foundation appears surrounded by several legends related, even, to Bernardo de Carpio (9th century). It was built on an old fort. Its construction began around the 11th or 12th centuries with the aim of monitoring the Lagoa de Antela.

It was part of the four fortifications that protected the Antela Lagoon (A Pena, Sandiás, Celme and Porqueira).

In the S. XII is already the scene of struggles with Portugal over the establishment of the border. In 1368 it was attacked by Duke Lancaster when he claimed the throne of Castile. The Irmandiños also entered and set fire to the castle.

It was the possession of the Count of Benavente, the Marquis of Viana and, finally, the house of Santana and Monterrei. It also had a basement, with 3 floors and an upper terrace.

Today, only part of the keep remains where you can admire the walls almost four meters thick. It is currently in ruins.
