Monforte, Montis Forte, was born at the foot of the medieval fortress of the 12th century, erected on the Castro Dactonio, where the convent of San Vicente del Pino, from the 10th century, was located. We are facing one of the largest fortresses in Galicia, where the Tower of Homage recalls the time when the city was an icon of feudal power in the Middle Ages. The Tower of Homage stands as a reminder and symbol of the powerful castle of San Vicente, belonging to the Counts of Lemos.
The Tower is one of the most characteristic architectural elements of the city of Cabe. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries, it was the most important building within the castle, hosting the Ceremonies of Homage, a rite that united the lord with his vassal. The Tower is 30 meters high arranged over four floors, 13 meters on each side, and walls 3 meters thick.
The Tower, seen from its base, is impressive, and from the battlements, it offers an excellent viewpoint of the Valley of Lemos. It is accessed by stairs that introduce the visitor to the medieval atmosphere, with the entrance door standing 8 meters above ground level to facilitate defense. The interior is museumized and features armor, furniture, objects, drawings, and models that recall the era of its splendor. On the first floor, a cistern was built to store rainwater, and on the third floor is the Queen’s Window, which seems to invite the visitor to rest during the climb and sit among the stones to travel back in time. The constant ascent is mainly rewarded at the top battlemented part, offering spectacular views of the city and its surroundings.
