It was the former church of the convent of the same name, which became the Cathedral of Vila Real in 1924. It is a 15th-century temple, with three naves, in the Romanesque style, although late, with Gothic influences, as shown by the pointed arches of its interior and its great verticality. The stained glass windows are the work of João Vieira, dedicated to the Gospel according to Saint John. The bell tower was erected in 1742 and the main chapel was remodeled in 1753. The temple suffered a major fire in 1837, being rebuilt in the following decade.
