Covilhetes, a type of meat pie, today so popular and representative of the gastronomy of Vila Real (one of the 7 Wonders of the Portuguese Table), owes its name to the small black clay form from Bisalhães (intangible cultural heritage of humanity – UNESCO 2016) in which they were baked. Their tradition was linked to the Festa and Feira de Santo Antônio, later also to the Festas do Senhor do Calvário and Senhora da Almodena, as well as to Carnival, practically unique occasions in which they were sold in stalls set up for them. Today, Covilhetes can be purchased in any pastry shop in Vila Real, as they are sold daily. Currently, the process of certifying their protected origin is underway, led by the Municipality and the Confraria do Covilhete (created in 2015).
