The name Macedo de Cavaleiros is related to the designation of fertile land for apples, in medieval Portuguese “macedo,” and to the remarkable action of Martim Gonçalves de Macedo, a knight who saved D. João Mestre de Avis from death.

The current municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros was created in 1853. With an area of ​​699.3 km², it is composed of 30 parishes, which group together 67 localities. In 1863, the village of Macedo, which had already become a royal estate during the reign of King John V, received the title of town. In 1999, it was granted the title of city.

The Municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros is a tourist destination in the heart of Northeast Trás-os-Montes. It boasts a remarkable natural heritage with the Natura 2000 Network Sites of Monte de Morais, the Sabor-Maçãs Valleys, the Serra de Bornes, and the Protected Landscape of the Azibo Reservoir, associated with environmental excellence that has earned it recognition with the ECO XXI Flag.

The Azibo Reservoir is the main attraction of the municipality and the district, welcoming thousands of tourists annually. They are primarily drawn by the excellent quality offered during the summer season with Blue Flag beaches, long sandy stretches, extensive landscaped areas, and numerous recreational activities, but also by its protected area. Its potential provides ideal conditions for canoeing and mountain biking, bird watching, or hiking.

To these attractions is added a rich historical and cultural heritage. Macedo de Cavaleiros offers a Museum Route where visitors can learn about the traditions and customs of the people; the pillories are recognized as Properties of Public Interest; some of the churches and chapels, old bridges, wayside crosses, fountains, and manor houses represent the legacy of a history spanning centuries.

Visitors to the municipality also have the opportunity to discover its rich and varied gastronomy, with veal and smoked sausages, game dishes, mushrooms, dried beans and turnip greens, chestnuts, excellent wine, and world-class olive oil.
