Maia is located in a territory of excellence. North of Porto, in the heart of the large metropolitan area, with a unique geographical location. Getting there is easy. Highways, light rail, or Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport. A territory with a strong connection to its history, but projecting towards a future of development and sustained growth. Today Maia is a harmonious symbiosis between rural and urban, between tradition and modernity, between agriculture and industry, in a healthy coexistence and a common desire for progress and sustainable development. A diversity that invites visitors and locals to leave home and discover everything there is to see. There are several points of interest, with different themes and reasons for interest, from the Lidador Tower, considered the fifth tallest building in the country, the Marian Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho, the Ecocaminho, the Quinta dos Cónegos, the Avioso Park, the Maia Zoological Park, among others. The Camino de Santiago, a World Heritage Site, has three integral routes in Maia. A Camino to discover through spirituality, religiosity, culture, and well-being. In Maia, you can also find great works by renowned architects: Álvaro Siza Vieira, Eduardo Souto de Moura, João Álvaro Rocha, or Alfredo Ascensão are some of the great names who left their mark on the city. Maia’s gastronomy owes much to its historical origins. Formerly an agricultural area, the production of ingredients was the starting point for recipes for dishes such as Bacalhau à Lidador, Cabra à Maiata, Roasted Veal, Turnip Porridge, Turnip Soup, Cornbread, Onion Cake, Sweet Bread, and Maia Biscuits, which still today are part of the gastronomic memory of the territory. The territory of Maia is also a city of Sports, being on the itinerary of the main national and international sporting events, such as the Maia Karate Open, MIAC – Maia International Acro Cup, Maia Open ATP, Grand Prix of Equestrian Portugal, among others. Maia is also a scene of much enthusiasm. The Pilgrimage in honor of Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho, the Handicraft Fair, the International Comic Theater of Maia, the World Press Photo, or the Christmas Market are representative of some of the cultural activities that take place in this territory. It is also a destination to relax and enjoy the small pleasures of life, even when the sun sets.
