The origin of these festivities held in Lugo dates back to 1754. Since then, they have become one of the most important festive events in Galicia.

Between October 5 and 12, Lugo celebrates the San Froilán Festival, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Within the program, two of the festive days stand out: October 5, when the religious acts in honor of the patron saint San Froilán take place; and the following Sunday, the so-called “O Domingo das Mozas”, which is dedicated to the exaltation of the traditional costume and Galician folklore. During these days, the streets of the city are filled with parades of “cabezudos”, “charangas”, street markets and magic and juggling shows.

In these festivities, children take on a special role with the San Froilanciño, a series of activities organized for them that includes popular games, chess competitions, plays and the International Puppet Festival, where the oldest puppets in Europe can be seen. The festivities end on October 12 with the Medieval Fair: the Cathedral Square and the area around the Roman wall are transformed into a typical market of the Middle Ages, with minstrels, knights, falconry exhibitions and traditional crafts and, of course, the celebration of a medieval banquet. In the evening, an exciting fireworks display brings the festival to a close until the following year.
