The origin of these festivities held in Lugo dates back to 1754. Since then, they have become one of the most important festive events in Galicia. Between October 4 and 12, Lugo celebrates the San Froilán Festivities, which attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The program highlights two main festive days: October 5, when religious acts in honor of the patron saint San Froilán take place; and the following Sunday, called “O Domingo das Mozas,” dedicated to the exaltation of traditional Galician costumes and folklore. During these days, the city’s streets are filled with parades of giant heads, brass bands, street markets, and magic and juggling shows. Children play a special role in these festivities with the San Froilanciño, a set of activities organized for them that includes popular games, chess competitions, theater performances, and the International Puppet Festival, where the oldest puppets in Europe can be seen. The festivities conclude on October 12 with the Medieval Fair: the Cathedral square and the surroundings of the Roman wall transform into a typical Medieval market, featuring minstrels, knights, falconry exhibitions, traditional crafts, and, of course, the celebration of a medieval banquet. At night, an exciting fireworks display marks the end until the following year.
