The Casa de los Mosaicos or Domus Oceani, owes its name to the magnificent mosaic with the head of the God “Oceanus” discovered in the street where it is located, Doctor Castro, in 1842. This museum hall is made up of the remains of a large Roman domus or manor house, dating from the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 4th century AD, of notable dimensions and richly ornamented.
Located in the centre of the city, very close to the ancient forum, among the remains of the ancient domus we can see part of some of its rooms; the large reception room (oecus) and antechamber, both paved with mosaics of extraordinary quality (part of which can also be seen under the pavement of the street in an archaeological window set up for this purpose), a triclinium or winter room with a hypocaust that ensured its heating, the remains of an interior porticoed courtyard and other smaller areas. A visit to this museum hall reveals the remains of the mural paintings that decorated some of the rooms of the domus.
