Considered the best and oldest festivals in honor of Saint John the Baptist in Portugal, the Festas de São João de Braga began in the 16th century and are an example of the perpetuation of Braga’s traditions.
Reflecting the dynamic associative life of the municipality, these festivities have a vast program, with activities throughout the month of June and are considered the biggest festivities in the Region’s Pilgrimage calendar. The biblical paintings of the East River, the dances of King David and the shepherds, the folklore, the songs of challenge, the fireworks and the festive illuminations captivate visitors. The night of São João itself, from the 23rd to the 24th of June, full of cultural shows, music and fireworks sessions, is marked by the influx of thousands of people, armed with leeks and hammers, as tradition dictates.
