The Medieval Bridge of Barcelos is an impressive Gothic stone construction, built at the beginning of the 14th century, between 1325 and 1330, by order of Count D. Pedro. This bridge was created with the purpose of establishing a crucial connection between the towns of Barcelos and Barcelinhos. Since its construction, the bridge has become a vital crossing point for pilgrims traveling the Portuguese Way to Santiago, as well as serving as a strategic location for the large fairs held in Barcelos since the Middle Ages.
One of the bridge’s notable features is its five-arch structure, with the central arch taller than the rest, a distinctive architectural trait of the time.
In recognition of its historical and architectural importance, the Medieval Bridge of Barcelos was classified as a National Monument in 1910.
